WELCOME TO HAWKER101!
This piece was created for the documenta fifteen exhibition in Kassel, Germany. I'm delighted one of my ideas was taken up and recreated to produce a board game version of the same idea. Hawker 101 is inspired by the lifestyle of informal street vendors (hawkers) and their day-to-day struggles to make a living while avoiding conflict with the authorities. Hawker 101 virtualizes and gamifies their confrontations with the police, entrepreneurial spirit, and fortitude.
CONCEPT
The idea is to create a juakali experience based on the hawker/vending scene in our locality. We decided to use concepts from games like subway surfers, temple run and several other games to create a game that resonates with people in the current local scene.
GAME STORY
A young man moves from the country side to try his luck in the city. The city of Dreams, intended luck and fortune. This was not his first time in the hawking/vending business. He had tried other ventures but lady luck did not shine good fortune upon him so he tried something that is a need for human survival; food. He made an investment in the local food industry, bought all the necessary equipment and ingredients for the business and since Nairobi was a new place it was also a great opportunity to discover Nairobi as he sells his “delicacies”. How will he survive the man-eating Nairobi city?
